About the Club

Support the Boys and Girls Club of Terre Haute

Flora Gilman Gulick took a vested interest in the underprivileged children in the city and longed to find a way to make sure they were well cared for. She started a free night school for boys, holding her first class by candlelight in January of 1908.

By May of that year, her class had grown to over 50 students, leading her to open her doors to hundreds of children in the spring of 1909. Every school expense was raised through a subscription program supported by many of the area’s most prominent families.

Eventually, they moved their headquarters to a larger location and, in 1911, became an incorporated club as a member of the National and International Boys’ Clubs of America. Fast forward to September 2000, and after over 90 years of supporting our areas’ children, the club officially became the Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club.

While many things have changed over the years—including the club expanding their facilities to include gymnasiums and other after-school attractions—one aspect has remained the same since Flora Gilman Gulick’s initial efforts: Their commitment to the children.

Their Mission

Support the Boys and Girls Club of Terre Haute

The Boys and Girls Club of Terre Haute offers an array of programs focusing on various different skills and learning objectives. No matter the program, though, three goals always remain the same:

  • Academic Success: Every young person who enters the club progresses from each grade to the next on time, ultimately leading to high school graduation and a solid plan for the future.
  • Good Character and Citizenship: The youth engages in community service to help avoid risky behavior and maintain a positive relationship with the community.
  • Healthy Lifestyles: Youth are placed on a path to healthy and productive lives through such programs as Wanna Play and Project Learn.

These programs run thanks to local sponsorship, so consider supporting the club today!
