Animal Shelter

Is it time to add a new 4-legged family member to your household? Then, adopt, don’t shop! There are so many cats and dogs at Humane Indiana that are waiting to find their forever homes, and you can start the adoption process today.

Check out the Facebook page for Humane Indiana to find out what pets are currently available for adoption. Then, make an appointment to meet your new furry friend!

The Humane Indiana Shelter

The Humane Indiana Shelter & Adoption Center, located in Munster, IN, works to find homes for homeless cats and dogs. They also work with families who need to surrender their pets or who need vital resources to help keep their 2-legged and 4-legged family members together.

You can view their currently available pets on their website. If someone gets your attention, schedule an appointment for a meet-and-greet. Meetings are held seven days a week and are required before adoptions can take place.

In addition to helping families adopt house pets, they have a variety of other programs to best serve every animal’s needs. For example, their Barn Cat Program is always looking for hosts. Barn cats are under-socialized cats that still need housing and food. However, they do well with living independently in barns, stables, and warehouses, and don’t need daily cuddles from their humans.

The Clinic

Vaccine

In addition to helping homeless animals find new families to take them home, the pets on site are well-cared for in the clinic, which offers a variety of services, like:

  • Spay/neuter
  • Vaccinations
  • Microchipping
  • Deworming

These services are also available to the public as a low-cost option to get your pet high-quality care. Check out their website to find out how to qualify for low-cost veterinary care.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Humane Indiana

Of course, it’s not just house pets that are served by Humane Indiana. They also have a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center that admits injured or orphaned wild animals, like:

  • Hummingbirds
  • Chipmunks
  • Coyotes
  • Foxes
  • Opossums
  • Eagles

They provide these animals with the rehabilitation and care they need to return to life in the wild. If you want to learn about wildlife care, you can visit the education center at the Humane Indiana facility in Valparaiso, IN. They typically hold informational seminars for people of all ages and camps for school-aged children throughout the year.

If you and your family are more interested in learning about domestic animals and house pets, those events, workshops, and camps are held at the shelter facility in Munster.

Get Involved with Humane Indiana

Dog Walking

Even if you’re not adopting a new friend, you may be inspired to get involved. You can do that in many ways. The shelter is always looking for volunteers in a variety of roles, including:

  • Dog walkers
  • Receptionists
  • Transporters
  • Resale and consignment shop clerks
  • Event staff

You can also submit a form to become a foster for the animals who need some time away from the shelter. Fosters care for stray animals at their home while waiting for their furever families to adopt them.
