Why is it important to donate blood?
By donating blood, you’re helping cancer patients, burn victims, trauma patients, and many more get the medical care they need.
Tips for a successful blood donation
- Sleep, eat, and hydrate the night before
- If you’re nervous the day of, bring something to read or listen to
- Once donation is complete, relax and have a snack
What to expect during your blood donation
- Plan for the donation to take about an hour
- Bring photo ID with listed date of birth (e.g. driver’s license or state ID)
- Know the name and dosage of any medications you take
- Know the dates of any out-of-country travel in past 3 years
Fun facts about donating blood
- Giving blood will not decrease your strength in the long-term
- Donating blood burns 650 calories
- Blood makes up about 7% of your body’s weight
- Every time you donate blood, you receive a mini physical for free
- Many diseases do NOT exempt people from donating blood, including diabetes, asthma and Lyme disease
- You cannot get infectious diseases by donating blood
