Kia Optima Safety Features

The Kia Optima interior excels with its list of advanced safety features that will keep you and your loved ones safe on the road. Whether you’re utilizing your Optima as a family-friendly vehicle or to bring a few friends on the next group night out, you’ll have an extra sense of security, no matter where life takes you.

Active Safety

The 2019 Kia Optima is equipped with an Anti-Lock Braking System with 4-Wheel Disc Brakes that incorporate several systems to ensure that the vehicle can reduce its speed, stop, or withstand any turbulent terrain on the road ahead. The Vehicle Stability Management and Electronic Stability Control ensure that when the vehicle experiences a loss of traction, brake pressure is forced onto the right wheels to ensure that the vehicle regains its stability and traction.

The Kia Optima also includes the Hill Start Assist Control. This feature ensures that the car doesn’t roll backwards when accelerating from the base of an incline.

Passive Safety Features

This vehicle is equipped with several passive safety systems. The Dual Front Advanced Airbags protect you and your front passenger. They sense the force of the collision and determine how much pressure to use to inflate the airbags to provide adequate protection while reducing the risk of unintentional airbag-related injuries.

Front passengers also receive protection from the Dual Front Seat Mounted Side Airbags, which deploy in the event of a side impact. The driver also benefits from the Driver’s Side Knee Airbag, which can reduce leg injury during a frontal crash. All passengers onboard receive protection from the Full-Length Side Curtain Airbags, which deploy in the event of a collision or side impact to provide head protection for the passengers inside.

Drive Wise

With Kia’s state-of-the-art Drive Wise driver-assistant technology, you’ll really feel like you have a personal assistant while on the road. These features work with exterior-mounted sensors that measure your speed and your distance from the vehicle or object ahead, so it can accurately predict if a collision or lane departure is likely and provide you with a warning to take measures to avoid a mishap. Such advanced assistance features include:

  • Forward Collision Warning: This system can detect a possible collision based on your speed and the distance from the object ahead and will provide visual and audible warnings.
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assistance: This system will automatically apply brake pressure if it senses a possible frontal collision. The braking gives you a window to react and stop the vehicle completely.
  • Lane Departure Warning: The sensors can detect when the vehicle begins to veer off of its intended path.
  • Lane Keeping Assist-Line: Working with the Lane Departure Warning, this system will apply corrective steering to guide the vehicle back to the indented lane.
  • Driver Attention Warning: This system will alert the driver if it senses that your attention level has reduced.
  • Blind Spot Collision Warning: Using exterior sensors, this system will accurately detect if a vehicle is approaching your blind spot so you can avoid changing lanes or having an accidental side swipe.
  • Lane Change Assist: This system alerts you if vehicles are approaching your rear.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Collision Warning: This system uses the rear radar sensors to detect any approaching vehicles or objects when you’re driving in reverse so you can avoid a potential rear impact.

What Are The NHTSA and IIHS Kia Optima Safety Ratings?

Now, let’s check out how the 2019 Optima was rated from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Both the NHTSA and the IIHS are reputable sources for crash testing, as they provide several different tests for models each year. These tests are then given scores based on how the vehicle performed.

The NHTSA rates the vehicle based on a star system from one to five in several different categories. The IIHS also rates based on several categories, but instead of a star system, they use ratings of Poor, Marginal, Acceptable, and Good.

Let’s check out where the Optima ranked based on these ratings.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

The Kia Optima received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This rating means that it received excellent scores in the Frontal Crash, Side Crash, and Rollover testing categories. During its crash test, the 2019 Kia Optima was shown to provide excellent collision protection throughout the cabin, providing adequate safety measures for all passengers on board.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

The IIHS named the Kia Optima a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ and awarded it the highest rating of “Good” in all five crash test categories, which include:

  • Small overlap front
  • Moderate overlap front
  • Side
  • Roof Strength
  • Head restraints & seats

The “+” in the Kia Optima safety rating indicates how its driver-assistance features have been rated by the experts at the IIHS. In terms of the Front Crash Prevention, the Kia Optima was given a superior rating.
